An All Expense Paid Trip to the Coldest Part of the World

Every year, the Antarctic Heritage Truth Selects four seasonal workers to spend the Antarctic summer at Port Lockroy working the facilities.

 “Do you have what it takes to work at Port Lockroy?” The job ad proclaims.

 Surrounded by Penguins and miles of ice, the workers will be responsible for the up keeping of the post office, shop, museum, and any other maintenance needs.

 It’s a competitive position, which includes applicants from all over the world. The selected will receive an all expenses trip and will also be paid more than €1,000 per month.

If accepted through the application selection process, the first round of ‘in person’ interviews will take place in the UK on May 11th and 12th. If accepted to be apart of the team, training will be required during the third week of September.

The non-profit organization is unable to accommodate travel costs for the interviews and team training events. Accommodations and food will be provided.

“Can you carry a big heavy box over slippery rocks and slushy snow while dodging penguins?” The job advertisement asked.

The summer season for Antarctica is approximately from September to March. The job description provides a disclaiming asking potential applicants if they would be able to live without heat, running water, and survive with minimal showers.

Established in 1944, Port Lockroy station was operated as a British research station until 1962. In 1996, it was restored as a ‘living’ museum and a historical site. More than 18,000 visitors travel by ship during the summer period.

The post office workers will handle more than 70,000 items of mail during the season.

All travel costs to and from Antarctica will be provided by the Antarctic Heritage Trust.
