The annual event Mr. VU took place Thursday night and eight men of Vanguard donned prince alter egos Thursday night in order to see who would be the “Fairest in The Land.” Amazing job to SGA All School Program Director, senior Eboni Brown for coordinating the event.
Mr. VU nominees were as follows:
Mr. Catalina: Senior Sam Towne, Shang from “Mulan”
Mr. Athletics: Senior DeAngelo Jones, Prince Naveen from “The Princess and The Frog”
Mr. People’s Choice: Senior Nick Frumkin, Prince Eric from “The Little Mermaid”
Mr. Balport: Senior Jon Beck, Flynn Ryder from “Tangled”
Mr. Fine Arts: Junior Jordan Laemmlen, Hans from “Frozen”
Mr. Leadership: Caleb Johnson, Prince Philip from “Sleeping Beauty”
Mr. Laguna: Junior Spencer Green, The Beast from “Beauty and The Beast”
Mr. Commuter: Senior Vasili Brasinikas, Aladdin from “Aladdin”
Hosts of the event were junior Ryanna Marsh and recent Vanguard graduate, Chelsea Streano. The ladies took on the personas of the two evil stepsisters from “Cinderella,” Drusilla and Priscilla, in search of their perfect man.
For the talent portion, Mr. Athletics, DeAngelo Jones, started off the show with a comedy routine that had the audience “eating out of the palm of his hand” as judge and Director of Diversity Programming, Coba Canales, said.
“It was just fun for me just being a part of the show and making it a good time for the students who came to watch,” Jones said.
Mr. People’s Choice and winner of Mr. Congeniality put together a dance routine. “It was awesome seeing this different group come together and bond over this event,” Frumkin said.
Mr. Laguna, Spencer Green, performed a rap and had support from his floor and friends. Mr. Catalina, Sam Towne, performed an original song about his time at Vanguard. Mr. Balport, Jon Beck, sported a tutu and athletic attire while holding a beach ball between him and his assistant’s body while moving lyrically to music. Trust me, it was much cooler than it sounds. Mr. Leadership, Caleb Johnson, rocked the audience with his guitar and phenomenal voice while performing a song.
Mr. Commuter, Vasili Brasinikas, created a musical mash up using various instruments such as the ukulele, the saxophone and a guitar. “I loved getting to know the other contestants…[although] learning the dance was kind of challenging!” Brasinikas said.
And finally, Mr. Fine Arts, Jordan Laemmlen did a theatrical performance for his talent where he was actually his alter ego, Hans. Laemmlen impressed the judges and was awarded the crown for Mr. Vanguard University.
