Austin Najib, an eighteen year old freshman, is a current goalie for the Vanguard Lions Soccer team. Although the Salt Lake City, Utah native isn’t a starter, he still brings a lot of hard work and effort to the team’s dynamics. Najib has been playing soccer since he was three. Austin also has an impressive background by playing with the Real Salt Lake Academy, which is recognized for the club’s professionalism to compete in the Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. This experience has given Austin the confidence to play for the Vanguard Lions.
When asked why he ultimately chose Vanguard as his choice of University, Austin said that, “I wanted to continue developing my growth in academics and in athletics while being in a Christian environment.”
Austin commented about his experience being a Lion so far, “My favorite thing about being a Lion at Vanguard University, is that everyone is very welcoming and open, they’re just down to earth people. I really enjoy the coaching staff and the other players on the soccer team. I love that everyone has a competitive side but makes sure to put God before all things.” Talk about a faithful team.
So, what does Austin Najib bring to the team? Tremendous talent and a will to win. Austin spoke about the attributes he brings to the team. “I bring a lot of experience. I help push the starting keeper, who is two years older than I am. I provide competition for him which is something he hasn’t had,” Najib explains. Austin proves to be competitive but also shines in sportsmanship.
As an extraordinary athlete would do, Austin strives for amelioration. Austin goes on to explain that he would improve by being the best Christian he can be. When asked what he would change he said, “I wouldn’t change anything. God wanted it the way it happened.” Amen to that.
When asked what his favorite memory is so far, Austin replied with, “So far my favorite memory would be between defeating both Biola and Rocky Mountain in two of the toughest nationally ranked games.” Vanguard went on to beat Rocky Mountain 4-0 and Biola 1-0, sending great memories for all.
Austin is described as a hardworking and focused player by his fellow Lions. Fellow teammate Daniel Yo bragged on Austin by saying, “He’s very vocal as a goalie so that helps everyone else out. He’s a leader who saves us from getting scored on and ‘drops dimes’ from his passes.”
Austin looks forward to his bright future in soccer. He explains that his goal for the future is to personally obtain a starting spot on the team, which he also says just comes with age and development. “For now I just want to get better every day. I’m not starting, so I like to help push the others and prepare the ones who are starting.”
Even though Austin is watching from the sidelines this season, his work ethic and dedication are destined to propel him into the game and into the hearts of the Vanguard Lion family. We wish you the best Austin.
