The Desire to Secede Returns

The idea of states seceding are reminiscent of the Civil War era. It seems like that time has come again as thousands of Americans nationwide have signed petitions to secede from the country.

The reasoning behind this phenomenon is due to the current state of the economy and the government’s spending habits.

Texas is the state with the most signatures, having reported over 100,000 signatures according to time.com. White House website called “We the People” promises that states that reach more than 25,000 signatures will receive a response from the White House.

Despite all the speculation, some people wonder if it is legally possible for states to secede if desired.

The legality of secession among the states today is a debate all across the country. It really is up to how the reader of the Constitution perceives it. However, most news sources state that secession is not legal.

However, six states other than Texas have reached past the 25,000 signature mark in their attempts to secede. Those states are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

Because Texas has the most signatures regarding this issue—there are over 118,000 up to date—most are anxious to hear the White House’s response to their petition, which will occur 30 days after initiation of the petition; December 9th.

What the White House will say in regards to Texas is up in the air, but come December 9th we will all find out.
