Presidential Debate 2012

The debate held on October 16 was an intense one indeed. President Obama came prepared to debate but didn’t seem to be prepared for the questions and the accusations thrown at him. Governor Romney, however, came across as confident and sure of himself.

During the debate both President Obama and Governor Romney made valid points in their answers. Voters in the audience asked them a series of questions ranging from health care to immigration to the economy and beyond.

Overall, it was voted that Obama had won the debate with a stronger performance than the first debate with such points as creating 600,000 more jobs by using greener energy such as solar power, wind power, and clean coal. With this, he plans to lower gas prices as well as create jobs.

Obama also goes on to say that for those who make above $250,000 he plans to go back to previous taxes during President Bill Clinton’s administration, which created 23 million jobs and expand Pell Grants for college students. In ties with taxes, President Obama also plans to have health care for women by providing such services as mammograms and cervical cancer screenings believing that every woman should be able to have access to these things.

On the subject of illegal immigrants and international affairs, President Obama stated he wants to make it cheaper for illegal immigrants to be able to become legal in America. However, he feels the government should go after the illegal immigrants that are criminals instead of the immigrants that have made an honest living here in America. He also spoke about the issue of the American ambassador being killed in Libya and he plans to find his killers and punish them.

Governor Romney had valid points in his argument as well and presented the audience with his five-point-plan he plans to implement if he becomes president. He argues that because we have produced less oil or coal, people have lost their jobs. Governor Romney ensures that taking back energy resources will bring back manufacturing jobs.

On the topic of lowering taxes, Romney proposes the middle class pays lower taxes. He proposes there will be no taxes for those making $200,000 and lower on your interests, dividends, capital gains, and savings. Though the middle class will not be paying the same amount of taxes, the top 5 percent of tax payers will continue to pay 60 percent of the income tax the nation collects. He also plans to bring about a recruiting effort to encourage employers to hire more women. In reference to women and Obama’s comment on Medicare, Romney also believes that women should have access to contraceptives and medical care of that nature.

Romney’s immigrant plan vastly varies that of the president. The governor proposes that we give green cards to the people who have skills that our country can use. He believes that illegal immigrations should be stopped. And the illegal immigrants already here should receive no amnesty; however, the children of said immigrants should be given a chance to remain in the country like for example to be a part of the military service.

Swaying into the realm of international affairs, Romney also plans to return work back into the United States and away from China. He plans to create more government jobs and to raise taxes to create more jobs. In addition, he encourages America to have relations with other countries such as in Latin America.
