There’s no denying that women’s sports are becoming increasingly popular. Wasserman is a Los Angeles-based sports marketing and talent management group. According to their estimate, the average percentage of sports media coverage in broadcasts, streaming, social media, and digital publications had an increase of 15% in 2022.
The 2023 Women’s World Cup opening match had to be rescheduled to a bigger stadium with room for over 80,000 spectators, and it sold out right away. On top of that, ratings records are being broken by the WNBA.
Watching women’s sports wasn’t always as popular as it is now. On the other hand, female athleticism has been socially devalued, given less coverage, and treated with less respect by the media and the sports business as a whole. Women’s sports are reaching a new level of perseverance and are a shining example of what happens when you speak up and don’t give up.
It has not always been easy to dispel stereotypes. The common and annoying comparison to men is a challenge many female athletes face. Even when regarded as some of the world’s best athletes, female athletes frequently face discrimination compared to their male competitors.
What does it mean in today’s world to be a female athlete?
India Moors, a junior on our Vanguard Track & Field/Cross Country team, shared a bit about her overall experience as a college female athlete.
“What has your overall experience as a college female athlete been for you?”
India expressed, “As a cross-country athlete, your team becomes your family. You have nothing to do but talk on your runs, and everyone rejoices in everyone else’s victories. Running in college with great coaches and teammates has been amazing for my mental and social health.”
“Have you ever faced any challenges in playing a sport?”
“Like every athlete, I have had to push through injuries and mental obstacles. What has made conquering the frustrations possible for me is, without a doubt, my teammates. They are so encouraging and supportive no matter what I go through,” Moors explained.
All in all, it is undeniable that women’s sports are very important to modern society. It should be Girls & Women in Sports Day every day!
