Early this semester, Sept. 14, the Global Center for Women and Justice held an event titled “The Legalization and Decriminalization of Prostitution Luncheon.”
This informational luncheon was run by Dr. Sandra Morgan, who interviewed Dr. Melissa Farley about the dangers and ways to fight the legalization of prostitution.
Dr. Farley has been involved with the anti-prostitution fight for many years. In this time, she has authored or co-authored 52 peer-reviewed articles, authored 2 books, and founded Prostitution Research and Eduction.
When Dr. Farley was asked what specific things we can do to fight prostitution, she said, “We need to clarify to politicians that there is 40 years of research done on the harms done by all types of prostitution. It all causes massive harms.”
She furthered this answer, talking about what to do in a debate setting. She clarified, “Be ready with answers in the face of arguments. They’ve studied our answers, so we can’t keep repeated the same facts over and over.”
Dr. Farley’s passion on the topic was evident, answering in-depth with every question she was asked, hoping to come across as clear as possible on the harms of prostitution and the importance of people being involved in the fight.
To the students of Vanguard University, heed Dr. Farley’s advice. Towards the end of the luncheon, she said, “We need younger people on the forefront of community action.” If you wish to learn more on the topic, visit Dr. Farley’s website and check out the “Quick Facts” section.
