On March 17th, I had the pleasure of attending what I thought would be a normal movie premier at the Starlight Triangle Cinema. I was assigned to review a movie that a few Vanguard people were a part of. Little did I know “Wild Boys”, directed by Morten Forland, would be an exciting, silly, and heartwarming escape from reality, with some familiar faces.
While director Morten Forland himself is not connected to Vanguard, he is based in Los Angeles and has won many awards for previous film projects. There are however, three familiar faces that the Vanguard community can pick out when watching “Wild Boys.”
“Wild Boys” is a story about adventure and purpose. Protagonist Kate, played by Catalina Hall’s very own Resident Director, Kate Frampton, must complete a quest left behind by her recently deceased father. Along the way, she meets some exciting new friends, and learns what truly living really means. The hero is easy to love and understand, characterized by her fear of stepping outside of her carefully constructed bubble.
Vincent Catalina and Jordan Laemmlen, playing characters Red and Jondeer respectively, bring a charisma that is not often seen on the big screen these days. These characters, played by the Vanguard alumni, are playful and kind—removed from society—they do not treat people according to the ways of world. As I watched their performances, I found myself wondering how different I would be if I had been untouched by the “normal” world the same way they are.
With a fun soundtrack and beautiful shots of the central California forest, “Wild Boys” is a fun watch that is appropriate for the whole family—and available to rent for only $2.99 on Amazon Prime Video. Let yourself be caught up in the possibilities of Kate’s hunt for her future and the Wild Boy’s comforting presence—and see for yourself the talent of the Vanguard alumni.
