Chapel is one of the most significant aspects at Vanguard University, there are 4am sessions and 2pm sessions. However, there is something significant about the night sessions that allow the word of God to sink in much deeper.
Third-year, Biology major Heritage Ekene is a new worship leader that joined chapel to be a part of a faith-based program. A program where she is able to be minister to people.
With the two sessions taking place at night, there is a certain significance in the atmosphere of the students, the building, and the presence of God.
Ekene stated, “I think there’s a certain ambiance during the night chapel where we’re all just hungry and longing for more.”
As students, we tend to have very busy schedules, especially during the day. Therefore, making it hard to attend chapel during the day sessions that are provided.
Ekene said, “More Chapels should be at night for the students who have packed schedules and cannot make it to morning chapels. Also, sometimes meetings for other programs are during chapel time which makes it hard to attend.”
If there were more days for sessions at night then the students that are committed to on-campus activities, clubs, or sports would be able to devote equal time to extra-curricular’s and chapel sessions. With that being said, there should be equal day sessions to night sessions.
As stress gets in the way of thoughts, relationships, happiness, or whatever it may be, allowing students to forget about all of that through more night chapel sessions would give students a way to express that feeling of it is okay to not be perfectly fine all of the time. There are days where life just doesn’t make sense, but through worship and feeling the presence of God life makes sense.
Ekene stated, “Night chapels are great because they are a great way to unwind and de-stress from a busy day.
Ekene said, “My favorite aspect of chapel is when we are in worship. At this moment I tune out all the noise and distractions and draw close to the presence of God.”
Being in the presence of God is an encounter that speaks volumes of a time where nothing seems to matter in the world. Every ounce of focus and attention goes on God.
Often enough after night chapel, we leave with the remembrance from the word of God before going to bed and it tends to leave us in the thought of Jesus.
More than likely we hear the saying “all bad things happen at night,” but what if we change that narrative by incorporating more chapel sessions at night, then changing that narrative of “all good things happen at night through Jesus.”
