Vanguard Tennis teams headed to Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday, April 12th to go head to head with the sixth ranked men’s Sea Lions. The Sea Lions came out strong leaving no room for error, ultimately taking the victory from the Lions eight games to one.
The Lions lone win came in singles play from Junior Lucas Pereira against Joel Myers winning his games 4-6, 6-3, and 13-11.
“It was a tough loss against Point Loma; we did not expect the result and we could have won even though the result did not indicate it,” junior Sandro Bucher said.”
Vanguard was not able to capitalize in doubles play either, losing all three of their matches, to a superior Point Loma squad. The loss on Tuesday ends the PLNU-VU season series, with Vanguard being swept. On Sat. April 16, the Lions hosted the first ranked Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, losing 0-9 for the contest.
The Women’s tennis squad had the same amount of luck against Point Loma, as they were swept in both singles and doubles 9-0 by a full firing Point Loma squad. The Pride also stumbled in their matchup against Fresno Pacific, dropping it by a score of 8-1.
“Most important for us going forward is to find confidence and energy for national in Alabama,” Bucher said.
The losses leave the mens side sporting a record of 6-13, including 4-9 in conference competition, and the women have a season record of 10-9, 8-7 in GSAC.
The season schedule finishes April 26th against Concordia University before nationals begin May 17-21.
