Vanguard’s campus is ever-changing. In person-classes have returned, the freshman class has reached a record-breaking size, and construction has begun for the brand new Freed Center for Leadership and Service.
Amidst all the chaos, Vanguard’s Student Government Association (SGA) is geared up and ready to advocate for the student body.
This year’s SGA Executive Council has released its vision statement which states,
“We strive to create a renewed culture by advocating for the student body, cultivating a united front, and laying a firm foundation for years to come through Christ.”
SGA’s first initiative of the 2022-2023 academic school year has been to revise its constitution.
When asked why they decided to do so Mason Fernandez, Senior Biochemistry major, and SGA President mentioned,
“Going into this position I was made aware that last year’s administration had an idea to change the structure of SGA. When they proposed this to me I thought it would be effective and it would enable SGA to better serve the student body through the addition of two new directors to the SGA Executive Council. I believe that with the two new directors we would be able to focus our time more on projects that can change Vanguard for the better. We would be able to use our time more efficiently.”
These two new positions are Director of Academics and Student Success and Director of Campus. Their intended purpose is to solely work on projects to better the campus. If you have any concerns regarding areas such as the dorms, cafeteria, classes, and other topics, they are the people to talk to.
There are multiple ways that students can reach out to SGA regarding concerns they may have.
SGA hosts monthly forums. These are gatherings where students can come and express their ideas, concerns, and thoughts.
They hosted their first forum on Wednesday, September 14. They received much feedback given from students, and they have already started focusing on finding solutions for what was voiced.
Students should also follow the SGA Instagram account, @Vanguardsga. This is a platform where they post updates on projects they are working on, resources students can utilize, and polls that students can respond to.
Each member of the Executive Council is also open to meeting and talking with students. You can email them, reach out through the SGA Instagram, or visit the Office of Student Engagement which is located on the bottom floor of Huntington Hall.
Be on the lookout for new initiatives and projects that SGA will be working on throughout the year!
