Vanguard Junior Bayleigh Porter, ran a 27 second faster personal record in the 6k at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitation in Claremont on Saturday, Oct. 3. Porter ran a time of 24:14 finishing 71st out of 192 competitors.
Porter stated, “I’m happy with the way I ran today, I improved my time by 27 seconds and felt the best I have felt all season. Our team is struggling with a lot of injuries right now but we’re on our way to recovery and I’m confident we will end stronger than we started. I’m pumped for what the remainder of the season has to hold.”
The lady lions were led by freshman Keili Dorn who ran her first 6k of her cross country career with a time of 23:17, she placed 36th overall in the invitational.
Junior Sarah Finch raced for the first since recovering from her stress fracture injury in her femur and ran the 6k in 28:31. “Today was my first race in 11 months after recovering from a femur fracture. It was so fun to be out there running again. My time was almost four minutes slower than I ran last year but I’m just thankful to be back on my feet and with time I’ll be back at it with full force.”
On the men’s side, Freshman Brandon Joseph ran a personal best of 28:38 in the 8k at the invitational. Junior Zach DeAtley finished 29th out of 167 finishers and ran the 8k in 26:18. Junior Christian Mora improved his time on the Pomona-Pitzer course from last year by a huge 54 second drop, DeAtley’s time also improved from last year as well. Junior Zach Hunt placed 50th and ran 26:44. Senior Cameron Barela finished the race in 33:00 and continues to work hard. The men ranked 12th out of the 16 scoring teams in the invitational.
Injuries struck the lions on both sides of the cross country team leaving five Vanguard athletes unable to compete this Saturday. Juniors Jared Shofi and Jesus Guiterrez who are both top runners for the men’s side rested this invitational and plan to come back in the next meet.
The women were not able to score overall as a team, due to the lack of women competing this week. On the women’s side, Sophomore Lauren Soholt, freshmen Olivia Rosellini and Jenna Birkes also did not compete because of injury but are striving to run in two weeks at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 17.
The Vanguard men’s and women’s cross country team will be traveling to Sunnyvale, Calif. to run in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational starting at 9:00am.
