Vanguard University’s Forum club is holding meetings again!
Our very own campus politics club kicked off its first meeting of the semester with a discussion on modern day racism.
I’m sure many have heard about the controversy surrounding recent cases related to racism in the news, like the turbulent protests in Ferguson, Missouri and the tragedy of the Eric Garner case in New York.
But if you haven’t heard of these cases or don’t stop to watch CNN on a regular basis you can still catch up on news and politics by stopping by one of the VU Forum’s club meetings and events.
The club was founded in the spring of 2014, by current sophomores Vanessa Lopez and Jared Agtunong, as the Political Awareness Club. Since its founding, it’s been a great success. Past events have included student debates, professor debates, which you can attend for chapel credit, movie nights, and political discussion nights.
The goal of the club is simply to present different viewpoints on government, current events, and prominent topics through group discussion and to help students gain a greater understanding of the issues that affect our day to day lives more than we realize.
So whether you’re a die-hard politics junkie, love to debate, or simply want to learn more about the world around you, there is a place for you at the VU Forum. If you want to check out the club and find out more, keep an eye out for these upcoming events:
- VU Forum Discussion Night on Tuesday, February 10th in the Forrest Room (next to Needham Chapel) from 7-8 P.M. This week’s discussion topic is on the Islamic Conflict with the Western World and will focus on what it means to follow Islam, some common misconceptions Westerners have of Muslims, and more. You are welcome to come with any questions, comments, or concerns you might have concerning the topic.
- VU Forum’s Movie Night in Health 100 on Friday, February 20th from 8-10 P.M.
- Field Trip to the Nixon Library on Saturday, February 28th.
You can find a full list of the upcoming events and club info on the VU Forums Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/theforumvu
