Junior Jessica Sanchez is doing something that many of us would be unable to commit to. Come January, she will be shaving her head and donating all of her hair to Wigs for Kids.
This decision was not made easily. According to Sanchez, “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a senior in high school.” Her goal, since that time, has been to grow out her hair until it was long enough to donate. Now it is, and she is sticking to her plan.
Her bold decision has motive and feeling behind it, it is not simply for the thrill of freeing herself from her hair. Sanchez states that she “doesn‘t understand where the idea that you need to have long, luxurious hair in order to be beautiful came from, and, quite frankly, I don’t think that it should be something that defines me.” In questioning this social expectation that women should have long hair, she seeks to go against it.
Her donation will foster the needs of a child suffering the effects of chemotherapy and other medical issues that result in the loss of hair. Wigs for Kids is a nonprofit organization that accepts donated hair and transforms it into wigs for children. These wigs come at no cost to the children which is why Sanchez chose this particular organization, to which she will donate all of her hair.
Sanchez is seeking partners as she donates her hair. She is asking that people join her by way of financial support that she can donate to Wigs for Kids along with her hair. No fear, she doesn’t expect people to be so bold in cutting all of their hair off, as well. Monetary donations are more than enough.
She does request, though, that readers would consider going to the Wigs for Kids website to learn about what it is that the company does. She is hopeful that others may want to follow in trend, even if not now, but sometime in the future.
Sanchez is confident in her decision and excited about it. She is ready for the change to her appearance as well as the effect that her donation will have on someone else. She says, “I know my hair will grow back. Knowing that I will be able to make a child happy is totally worth not having hair for awhile.”
