The word modesty may strike fear in the hearts of men and women. The image of a scowling Puritan woman flashes before their eyes and they shudder at the thought of such a dull and boring life. But is modesty really all that bad? Do your clothes have to be dull to be modest? Of course not; the only boring aspects of life are those that one is not willing to make the most of.
As Christians, it is one of our many duties to be presentable in both conduct and appearance. We are in the world but are told to be “not of it”. This does not mean that we have to live in this bustling world and keep our eyes shut to it. It does mean that our eyes should turn from evil things; we have been set apart by our Savior Jesus Christ, shouldn’t we act like it?
With all the things going on in life, it is hard to be modest. Sometimes you’re just tired and you throw on whatever comes out of your closet first, perhaps there are body or self-image issues going on. Or maybe – and most likely – it’s just as simple as this: “Everyone else is doing it, why shouldn’t I?”
This is an interesting argument, seeing as we are in college. Our whole learning experience is crafted for us specifically, yet we seem to think that our individuality can’t permeate every aspect of our lives.
No two people on the planet Earth do anything exactly alike, so why should our style of dress be any different? Don’t conform to the fashions of today. Be who you are. In all honestly, fads never last long anyway.
The impression you make on someone does, though. So when you meet someone that strikes your fancy, you definitely want to grab their attention. It’s the type of attention you may receive that is dependent on your fashion choice.
There is nothing wrong with leaving a little mystery– It adds to your appeal. Tons of business owners use this advertising tactic to attract customers, and it works fine for them. It only makes sense that it would work out just as well for you.
Plus, mysteries are intriguing. They’re eye-catching and interesting. There’s no reason that your clothes can’t be the same way. You can have bright colors on looser fitting jeans or dazzling patterns on a blouse that covers. For guys, putting on a shirt and having your pants at your waist would work.
The Lord intended for us to have a partner in life, for life. So you want to give your special someone an incentive to stick around for that long, long period of time. Cover up and put on your biggest smile and don’t be afraid to let your brains show.
Don’t sell yourself short and don’t settle for less than you deserve. Because you’re hottest when you’re modest.
