“The Beat Goes On” is a stunning and entertaining must-see. The dancing, singing, and the costumes showcase that our theater program is superb. One of the most striking features of this show was the attention to detail in the costumes.
This show champion dance numbers that you would expect in the spring musical. I was blown away at how much work went into this show. The cast had only four weeks to prepare, whereas most shows have eight weeks to put together a show.
The Beat Goes On is an original script that was written, and Directed by Vanguard’s own Vanda Eggington. This musical takes the audience through the evolution of music, described by head Choreographer, senior Bretlyn Schmidt, a “Rock-umentary.” Tour guides through the show are lead by Kelsey Coleman and Vincent Catalina; these two provide comedy through the show as well as introduce the new era.
The cast performs beloved decade songs from the 50’s to the 90’s. Favorite artist like Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, The Temptations, Led Zepplin, Cher, Marvin Gaye, Carole King and Britney Spears are all joined together in this celebration of music.
The show is also educational in the most entertaining way. Historical events are integrated in the musical voyage. Events like the Vietnam War, JFK assassination, and the invention of cassette tapes are highlighted to characterize each decade.
Student admission is five dollars and it is worth every cent. This show should not be ignored it will get your toe tapping and lift your spirit.
