Going to Twerk

Fourth floor danced their way to victory last Wednesday in Rez Rally. The dance-off took place in the hot and sweaty gym, dubbed by students as “The Pit.”  An army of Vanguardians cheered as their brother-floors made fools of themselves, yet nothing could prepare anyone for the amount of booty-shaking that took place, not even the VMAs.

Culture is changing, dancing is changing, the definition of introducing yourself has changed as well. Dancing is something that everyone is not so talented in. As the movie “Hitch” teaches, sometimes people need to stick to the sway and snap, and that is okay. What used to be the go-to-dance-move was the disco point but now the go-to is  butt-shaking or twerking.

Not to say the dancing was horrible last night, the floors put on their best effort to embrace the moment. Huntington residents also worked push-ups into their dances. The laguna RAs and RD danced as well.

Rez rally is the first event of the year to spark competition and pride in Huntington’s floors. Aside from the dance competition, the floors go head-to-head in other challenges such as a shooting free-throws, doing push-ups and singing. Then the main event takes place, each floor takes to the center of the gym and performs their self-choreographed dance. The winner of the competition receives loud cheers and buckets full of bragging rights.

Fourth floor RA, Jonathan Vazquez, says he told his residents just to have fun that night and not want the desire to win. Their routine did have a booty shake and music that brought back memories of most of our childhood, including the Jonas Brothers and NSYNC.

It was a memorable kickoff for a new school year for Huntington and Laguna halls. This tradition will hopefully stay as a fixture in our Vanguard sub-culture, hopefully with a lot less twerking.
