Last Thursday evening, Vanguard and our rival university Biola joined together for some friendly rivalry. Red Bull sponsored the Red Bull Kick Off soccer tournament at a park near Biola in La Mirada. Students from Biola played students from Vanguard in a series of soccer games. Vanguard came with a total of five teams.
The teams feared the event would be rained out, but thankfully, it stayed dry for the teams.
“The [event] was super fun and I had a great time,” Sam Guerra said. “We got to go out and play and just have a good time.”
It was a small, five-versus-five urban style soccer tournament. Each team consisted of six to seven people, one of which needed to be a female.
The tournament consisted of several 15 minute games, with the clock never stopping for substitutions.
Of course, there were Red Bull drinks on the sidelines for the players to quench their thirst in between games. There was also a representative from Knockaround Sunglasses at the event giving out freebies, as well.
The event was hosted by Biola students Sky Dickinson and John Hanscom, and Vanguard student Whitney Eckis.
Biola teams took first and second place while Vanguard’s six person team “The Frumkins” took third place. The team consisted of Nick Frumkin, Kelvin Fares, Luke Cadallack, Peter Perchov, Sam Guerra, and Angie Hook.
“No one took [the games] too seriously, yet it was still competitive,” Guerra said.
The first place prize was a set of tickets to Red Bull Sound Space, second place; Red Bull supports the next event at your school, third place; New York Bulls t-shirts.
“It was a good event to get friends together and have fun playing soccer together,” Guerra said.
