Women’s Center Does Justice

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and in commemoration of it, the Global Center for Women and Justice has held several events throughout the month to bring awareness to the issue.

From information on dating violence to human trafficking, the Women’s Center has been working hard to bring awareness on issues that occur in our community every day and ensure students know these issues are real and happen around us.

Sandie Morgan, the director of the Women’s Center, joins the movement every year to let everyone know what abuse truly is– and it isn’t just physical.

“We join the national Domestic Violence Awareness Month every October in solidarity with thousands of others who are concerned about violence to children, dating violence, intimate partner violence and all forms of abuse. Abuse includes verbal, physical and sexual and impacts the future of our community,” Morgan said.

Morgan and Leslie Brock, the coordinator of events for the Women’s Center, have been putting on events to let people know about these issues.

They have had two Monday morning events and one Monday evening event, with one more morning event coming up on October 29th. The seminars have included dating violence with a student panel speaking about the dangers of it even on campus. Sam Hussein from Iraq giving a lecture on violence against women, and Campus Pastor Mike Beals will be speaking about the effects of pornography on relationships in the last domestic violence awareness seminar.

“We’re all about education the community about issues pertaining to women,” Brock said, “We want to promote empowering women and God’s justice.”

Morgan and Brock want to encourage everyone to take a stand and end violence toward women in any way, not just physical violence. There are many ways to get involved and get more educated on the subject.

“Students can get involved by signing up for a Women’s Studies Minor, subscribing to our podcast on iTunes (Ending Human Trafficking), joining the Live2free club, and attend GCWJ events,” Morgan stated.

Most people think the Women’s Studies Minor is just for ladies, but men are highly encouraged to minor in it as well.
