SGA: Behind the Scenes

Student Government Association, SGA are terms we hear on a daily basis. Terms that, for some of us, go undefined. For any student who doesn’t know, SGA isn’t a collective of superhuman students, fighting as vigilantes for the betterment of Vanguard, or are they?

There are 27 members of the Student Government Association whose duties are best summed up in their mission statement: “With passion and commitment, we, the 2012-2013 SGA Executive Board, strive to authentically represent and actively empower the students of Vanguard University.”

The members of SGA meet weekly to discuss what is happening on campus as well as to plan for future activities. The Executive Board consists of President Allison Tash, Vice President of Administration and Activities, Marina Plott, and Vice President of Legislation and Finance, Danny Ledezma.

Through its committed planning, SGA is the driving force behind many of the events that occur on campus throughout the year.

The first event of the 2012-2013 school year was the ALL School Party: World of Color. SGA Activities Director Heather Nelson loves planning all the events. “So much planning and effort went into The All School Party and it was a giant success,” she said. “I am excited to plan more great activities this year.”

Nelson spent much of the summer planning the kickoff event for the year. For students who did not attend, the party consisted of a glorified, all out, chalk paint war. Student feedback was positive and offered Nelson encouragement in planning future activities.

Upcoming events include the Harvest Party on October 25th and Pit Pride sometime in November. SGA encourages students to stay tuned for more information and plan to take part in both events.

After weeks of campaigning, the freshman council has been elected. SGA has officially welcomed and initiated the new SGA members for the year; Ashley Jodoin: President, Michael Avila: Vice President, and Rexella Matamoros: Activities Director.

With 27 dedicated students, SGA aims to unify and represent the students of Vanguard, freshman and senior alike.

SGA isn’t a term to fear or scrutinize, it is a group of students dedicated to the betterment of student life on campus. We have them to thank for events and activities that occur throughout the year. Their only request is for students to take part in what they plan because, after all, they do it all for us.
