Heavy raindrops drummed against the floor-to-ceiling windows as a group of Vanguard students gathered in the O’Cope Budge Library. The President of the Creative Writing Society, Rebekah Pulaski, stepped up to the podium in front of a wall of colorful bookshelves and called for the mocktail-drinking guests to be seated.
Hosted by the Mix as well as the Creative Writing Society, “Open Mic Night” was a splendid opportunity for students to share their creative work in front of an audience. Attendees included the presidents of both clubs, along with several English majors and creative enthusiasts.
To start, everyone was invited to write a Haiku (a short poem with a certain amount of syllables per line) about an embarrassing story, and to share it if we liked. We were then invited to read it to the group, if we felt comfortable doing so.
Then, all the creative pieces were read. There were comical poems, intriguing short stories, and even a beautifully-written song performed. The audience laughed and listened in awe to the works that were read and performed, and each artist seemed to walk away proud of what they had accomplished.
Overall, the event was enjoyable and well-organized, and both Rebekah Pulask and Jodi Hartlein—President of the Mix — did a fantastic job at putting on an event that was not only an excellent creative outlet, but a lot of fun as well.
