Senior Spotlight: The Vanguard Voice’s Graduating Editor-in-Chief

After a series of obstacles that lead to great achievements, graduating senior Emily Davis has persevered through the constant growth of the journalism department through her tenure as The Vanguard Voice’s Editor-in-Chief (2021-2022). Graduating with a degree in English and a minor in journalism, Emily Davis did a lot of writing over the course of four years. When asked about attaining the position as Editor amidst the course of its evolution, she jokes, “It’s been a wild journey seeing the newspaper progress. When I became editor, I was the only newspaper ‘veteran’ so to speak, that wasn’t graduating.”

She adds, “I’m also the editor-in-chief of Synecdoche, which is the English department’s capstone.” Her roles don’t end there, Davis is also a member of the university’s Scholar Program where she states she has been able to develop her critical thinking skills and receive an even fuller college experience.

Not only did this scholar largely contribute to the improvement of the newspaper, she also achieved something very exciting in her personal life. She shares with a bright smile, “I got married!”

Davis encourages students in the field of writing to just be willing to learn. She speaks with emphasis, “Just be willing to learn, because you will learn– so much.” After years of exhausting her AP style book, Davis looks forward to entering a season she hopes to be restful post-grad.

“I look forward to not having that constant growing to-do list. I used to be a yes person, I’ve now become a no person, because there’s just so much to do,” she expresses. Davis goes on to explain her desire for a calmer reality after graduating college, and the excitement for whatever comes next.
