On the evening of Feb. 21, the Black Student Union (BSU) held their annual, Black History Month Banquet in the Mahlon E. Layne building.
“Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans, and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history,” BSU stated.
The event featured a live jazz ensemble, cultural foods such as doro tibs, ingera, and collard greens, and spotlights important individuals in black history.
Some of the featured figures included Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman in Congress, Daisy Bates, a civil rights activist who documented the Little Rock Crisis, and William Hastie, the first African American federal judge.
Attendee Alexia Arechiga stated about the event, “It was so sweet to see how everyone was brought together in unity, trying new food, and bonding in an atmosphere set with so much peace and joy! It was truly like a glimpse of what Heaven will be like as we come together as one Kingdom.”
