(COSTA MESA, Calif.)- The opening of the new Freed Center for Leadership and Service has been pushed back to March 2024, per sources. The initial deadline’s soft opening was set for around Christmas Day of 2023.
Vanguard’s Athletic Director Jeff Bussell has experienced delays with construction during his previous stints at Jessup University and University of Antelope Valley.
“Every school I have been at, we have done a new project … and everything seems to get delayed.”
“It’s something I’ve seen all the time,” Bussell remarked before adding that the grand opening of the Waugh Student Center on campus was also postponed in 2020.
The biggest factor in these delays? The record precipitation beginning in October 2022.
“I guess every time we have a project, it has to rain as well,” Bussell quipped.
Third-year Women’s Basketball sharpshooter Faith Boss expressed her regret for the situation, “I’m kind of disappointed because it was hyped up that it was gonna open in January.”
Financially, Bussell doesn’t think the delay has hurt Vanguard too much, citing that they had planned for a possible delay and knew of the possibility that they could be renting out other facilities.
This year, VU indoor sports will be utilizing a combination of venues, including Orange Coast College and Calvary Chapel High School. The Athletics department website for the University provides the location for each matchup.
