The early twenties are known to be some of the most exciting but challenging times of a young adult’s life. Whether you are soon to graduate or starting a new job, it all comes with the unknown. This season is one of self discovery–full of opportunities to pursue the will of God for our lives. As a 21-year-old, I have experienced firsthand the beauty and challenges of this season. Read on for some advice I have to share thus far as twenty-something navigating early adulthood.
Take Risks
As a young adult embarking into the world, take this time to be fearless in your endeavors. Apply for jobs that you are interested in, even if you are unsure of your qualifications. There have been times in my college years that employers have taken a chance on me despite my lack of experience. If you are unsure of a passion but you find something intriguing, try looking for internships in that field. This can be a great opportunity to learn while gaining experience. In the midst of all of this searching, remember to also be creating work of your own. Take a deep dive into a passion project and you might be surprised with the outcome.
Build Meaningful Relationships
Despite this season being one that is heavily focused on yourself, remember to pour into the relationships in your life. We are all aware of the fact that life was not meant to be done alone. One thing I would highly suggest is to join a small group or start attending a bible study at your local church. Doing this has been life-changing for me in so many ways. Gaining community, accountability, and surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals is a great way to grow in your twenties. On this same note, your twenties can also be a time to reconnect with family members who you may have grown distant from throughout your busy years in college. It will truly bring fulfillment to your life as a young adult learning the ropes of adulthood from those who are further ahead.
Avoid Comparison
With the constant hustle and competition in the workplace and surrounding environments in your twenties, it’s important to remember that we are all on our own unique journey. While your path and story may look different than your friends or colleagues, that doesn’t make it any less significant. Focus on the talents and skills that God has given you, and hone into cultivating ways that you can put those skills to work. In all of this, remember that God created you with an amazing purpose. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 reminds us that we are one body with many parts, all doing very different but essential functions. It’s not meant to look like the world’s idea of success, but He will bless your obedience in living out your unique function.
Find Your Identity in Christ
Lastly and most importantly, remember to find your identity in Christ, and not in the world. The world will have you in a constant runaround of inadequacy and confusion, but God has a perfect purpose for you. Seek him for wisdom, direction, and joy in the midst of this season of growing. I truly believe that our twenties are some of the most pivotal years of our life. Let’s be sure to do it right, sourcing our joy and wisdom from Him in order to find true and lasting fulfillment.
