Despite failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) will participate in the tournament. It was the first time since the 1980s that the United States had missed the World Cup. This year’s team will feature some of the youngest players in the history of the tournament, handing the U.S. reputation over to the younger generation.
25 of 26 players selected by manager Greg Berghalter for the USMT’s World Cup roster will look to make their global debut in Qatar 2022 this winter, after becoming the youngest nation to qualify for the event. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Giovanni Reyna, Tyler Adams, and others have become familiar names to U.S. fans because of their reputations in past seasons for their club teams at the highest levels in Europe.
The preparation for this tournament has been much different than in 2008 which was hosted in Brazil. This year it is being held in the winter instead of the normally being in summer games, all of Europe’s club seasons are being put on hold for the first time ever, leaving very little time for all of the nations to train together.
American fans are counting down the days to see what their country has to prove this winter as they start in the group stage against Wales, Iran and European giant, England.
