Do you ever become overwhelmed from all the school work you have to accomplish before the end of the week, or feel tense while having to cram for tests? Meditation and breathing practice are tactics utilized by Mindfulness and Relaxation, an on campus therapy group, to help release certain stressors throughout the body, so that you can have productive and less stressful days.
Mindfulness and Relaxation is a therapy group led by two therapists, Michelle Moon and Serena McCormick, who are a part of the campus Counseling Center. The session takes place every Tuesday through March 1st, in Scott 128 from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. All students are welcome to join any of the six sessions and they are free of cost.
Since this is an actual therapy group, all participants are asked to sign a group therapy consent form for the confidential disclosure of all information and thoughts shared within the group. The therapy sessions are led by professionals, so they do not want any shared information by students to be spoken upon with other students outside of these sessions. The methods and techniques they teach are completely safe and relaxing, and are useful skills to have when needing to practice relaxation on your own.
College students are constantly faced with stress, so these types of opportunities on campus should be taken advantage of. During the session, the therapists shared their goals as far as helping students deal with stress and anxiety. “To create a space where people can relax and have piece at mind; our goal is to reduce stress and create awareness of what is happening within one’s soul” therapist Michelle Moon says. The focus of each session rests upon the mind-body connection and relaxation of the soul of each individual who attends. Serena McCormick and Michelle note that their motivation to be therapists stems from their desire to genuinely help other people. They get personal satisfaction from seeing people grow through skills they are passionate about, which serve to assist individuals.
The therapists have provided a video link that gives individuals a guide to relaxation that can be used whenever a student feels the need to be at peace. Even if you do not have any serious stress or anxiety, join the therapy group for useful tips that can be essential to you in the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b49WIEW3zqQ.
