Despite the protests and petitions that were made to “dump Trump” from his November 7th SNL hosting services, the ratings for the episode were the highest SNL had received in the last three years. This was largely to the chagrin of many Latinos and civil rights activists protesting outside the NBC studio. However, it’s worth mentioning that this doesn’t count the 40th anniversary episode that turned out to be one of the most watched television episodes in history.
Although the episode was watched by many, the overall critical consensus for the episode was negative. Many critics pointed out that Donald seemed to stumble through many of his lines, which weren’t all that funny to begin with. Furthermore, it seems that many of the jokes directed at Trump were filtered in order to not completely embarrass the current frontrunner.
As a student at Vanguard University, I found that I mostly agreed with many of the critics. I considered it worth watching because of who Trump is and what he could potentially do for all the other college students and for the rest of the country.
On a more positive note, Trump was generally praised for his “tax man” persona that he played in the Drake “Hotline Bling” parody video. It seems that more dancing and less talking, was the way forward for Trump on an otherwise rough night.
Ironically enough, the most humorous Trump related moments of the episode didn’t include him at all. One of these moments occurred during the “Weekend Update” segment, which ripped on Trump and the release of his new book entitled Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again. The most prominent joke regarding the book poked fun at Trump and his alleged racist ideals. Essentially, Michael Che speculated on the possible reference to America’s history with slavery. By making America great again, Che fears that Trump believes America “had it right the first time.”
One of the more awkward moments of the episode was when Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, made her entrance on the show. Based on how she arrived, it was perceived by many that she was expecting a warm welcome. Instead, Ivanka was greeted to completely non-existent fanfare.
All things considered, it proved to be a tough day at the office for Trump and his family. However, if elected, I’m sure there will be many tougher days at the oval office for Mr. Trump.
