During this academic year of budget and program cuts, yet another team has received this regretful news. Vanguard’s Tennis team has been cut. The team had a meeting March 2nd with President Mike Beals and Provost Dr. Doretha O’Quinn. At the meeting, the Men’s and Women’s tennis team both got cut because “they did not fit the mission” of vanguard and the money problem was the “tipping point.”
The men’s team is consisted of all foreign students aside from one California born teammate. The women’s team is made up Californian born students and two students from Arizona. The team member’s scholarships will expire at the end of this semester, forcing students who cannot afford the tuition to go and look for at other schools.
The coach of the Tennis Team Mattias got the GSAC Coach of the year award just last year. It has been told to the student body many times that the Scott building is self funded and is not being taken from student tuition. However when there are multiple cuts all over the place, it seems more like poor timing with this new building.
The Tennis Team is still up and running. Go support the team while they are still here. You can check out their schedule and on the Vanguard Athletics page. While there take a picture, post it to instagram, and tag @vuvoice sharing your support.
