Club of the Month: Live2Free

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

The Bible commands us to love one another. As Christians we are set apart to care for one another.

Live 2 Free is an on campus student lead group which educates people on what humans can do in order to prevent human trafficking and also obeys the command to love on each other.

Seven years ago, Live 2 Free was founded by former student Sandie Morgan. While Morgan was living in Greece she helped women rebuild their lives after experiencing human trafficking. Seeing the impact this had on the world she decided to raise awareness at Vanguard by starting a club to promote the awareness of human trafficking here in Orange County.

Live 2 Free is associated with the Global Center for Woman and Justice (GCWJ) which prepares young men and women to understand the impact of gender issues. GCWJ is actively ran by its founder, Sandie Morgan.

Today, Barbara Issac is the current president of the club. Before joining the club during her freshman year at Vanguard, she was involved in a similar social justice club in high school.

“God put it on my heart to get involved. I have a heart for the victims, its a ruthless industry.” said Issac and with this God given desire, Issac became president in the spring of 2013.

The club is an outreach program that goes to local middle schools and high schools and gives about a 45 minutes interactive presentation on educating young people about human trafficking and informing them about resources on how to prevent human trafficking.

“Human trafficking is a big issue. People get intimidated when talking about the issue. Students should join because there are people who are being abused and taken advantage of. As brothers and sisters in Christ we are called to take care of each other. People need to realize its not a gender issue but a people issue. Why shouldn’t you get involved?” said Issac.

This club normally does not host on campus events because most of their focus is on outreach to schools but on December 2, at 9:30pm Live 2 Free will be hosting a coffee night.  Poetry and songs will be preformed by fellow Vanguard students to raise awareness of human trafficking. Free trade vendors will also be present at this event for an evening of enriching talent.

“The club usually tries to do three presentations a month but it all depends on if schools contact the organization with an appropriate date for which they can give their presentation on,” said Issac.

Live 2 Free has about 25 members, 12 of those are actively involved in going out to the schools.

This club meets regularly on Mondays from 10 a.m. in Heath 109.
