Unlike the rest of us, social media and scandal never take a vacation. Welcome to the one stop shop to this semesters mayhem, through the Twitter name “Vanguard Crushes.” Be careful who you tell, for this can make or break your crush. In this day and age, it was only a matter of time before VU got its own anonymous crush site.
A Twitter account with the writer unknown spread like wildfire across this campus this past week. Vanguard Crushes allows students and others with a Twitter account to Tweet their latest crushes to the site. I know all of you are wondering if this will blow up like last years controversial VU Confessions page of Facebook… most likely, yes. Though all of us do go to Vanguard, we all have a secret side.
Will this Twitter page turn in to the scandal of the VU Confessions? Well, what’s the difference between gossip and scandal? So glad you asked. Anyone can commit a minor indiscretion and generate a day’s worth of buzz, but in order for gossip to birth a true scandal it requires the right person to be in the wrong place.
To the creator of the Twitter page, be careful walking down the primrose path, for one thing about making a deal with the devil: he always comes to collect. Sticks and stones may just break bones, but the wounds from words never heal. Especially when they’re words we hoped we’d never read. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there would be no gossip without secrets. You might be brave enough to reveal your secret only to have it used against you. Or someone else’s secret might affect you in unexpected ways.
There are some secret crushes you’re only too happy to keep. Others surface only to be buried away deeper than they were before. But the most powerful secrets are the truths you thought you could never reveal. That once spoken change everything. But don’t worry, the brightest stars burn out the fastest. Or at least that’s what I heard. We are all just waiting for a star to fall, right? An alarming number of students are creating Twitter accounts for the sole reason of seeing if their name has been dropped on this site. Who doesn’t love to read about themselves.
It is doubtful that this will die out this semester… that is, assuming the infamous VU Confessions page won’t come back. Who is the owner of Vanguard Crushes account you ask? That’s a secret I’ll never tell. So remember, watch what you post and keep it clean. Wouldn’t want karma coming back.
