After a momentous 2012 season, the Lady Lions enter the 2013 season with a perfect 5-0 start, outscoring their opponents by a score of 19-3. The team boasts a 22 player roster with 5 seniors leading the way. Kayla Arenas is a senior forward for the nationally ranked Lions
Kayla Arenas, a senior from Fullerton, California, transferred to Vanguard last year from Cypress College. While majoring in Sociology, she has found the time to balance a heavier academic load while adding in a minor in Communications. Following her career at Vanguard, she plans to pursue a career in human resources. Kayla comes from a family of four children: an older brother, A.J., who is a junior at Vanguard on the men’s soccer team
Kayla has started the season strong, scoring 5 goals against the University of Antelope Valley. When asked about the goals, she gave credit to her teammates for their help and aid in scoring those goals. Currently Arenas is Vanguard’s leading scorer for this 13-14 season.
With a strong support system back home, Kayla’s goals for the season include competing in conference and by doing so receiving a birth into the national tournament. Throughout their matches this season, Kayla expects her team to come out of the gate every game with the motivation to win and, in doing so, have fun playing the sport they love.
Kayla had nothing but great things to say about how Vanguard has impacted her life. By attending Vanguard it opened up many opportunities for her, “I was able to finally accept Christ back into my life.” Being a student athlete has helped Kayla “become a responsible person” because if she does not get her assignments turned in on time and does not continue to get good grades, she does not get to play.
This year, the Lady Lions have had a challenge finding their rhythm when playing. Arenas explained that it is always a balancing act for new players adapting to the Vanguard system and getting the returners on the same page. But what makes this team so outstanding is how passionate they are about what they do. “We all work really hard and we are all competitive. [This work ethic] will bring the best out of all of us,” said Arenas. The lions will continue to grow as a team as the season continues.
Kayla has high expectation on her senior year as she continues to thrive on the soccer field. With great excitement and anticipation the woman’s soccer team season will unfold in the hopes of being victorious.
