The Women’s soccer team beat the Masters College Mustangs in the GSAC tournament’s semifinal last Friday. With a final score of 2-0, the Lions showed their determination and poise beating the Mustangs for the second time this season and winning their eleventh consecutive match.
Junior Jordan Davidson scored the Lion’s first goal early in the first period with a well-placed pass from Senior Amanda Couch. The Mustang’s goalkeeper, Ilyssa Espiritu, attempted to grab the loose ball, but Davidson’s impressive speed allowed her to chip the ball over Espiritu’s head, and in dramatic fashion, bounce in untouched.
Junior Kayla Arenas capitalized on a deflected corner kick off Espiritu, kicking in the Lion’s second and final goal of the GSAC semifinal.
After VU’s high-powered offensive in the first period, they displayed their defensive dominance in the second period.
Goalkeeper Lauren Terry racked up four saves in Friday’s game, making it the Lion’s tenth perfect match in conference play. With 34 total stops, and allowing only 6 goals this season, Terry and the Lions have proven to command the outcome of their games through their ball control and team chemistry.
The Lion’s chemistry on and off the field, have made for a winning season with spirited optimism. Senior Charlotte Wisniewski, midfielder for the Lions, comments on her team’s chemistry, “We like each other, we want to be around each other.”
With 13 games allowing zero goals, the Lions go into next weeks GSAC Tournament Championship match against Biola with high hopes. The Lions play Biola Friday the 9th, already having beaten them earlier in the season. Biola was the last team who was able to score on the Lions, making Friday’s 1p.m. match a much-anticipated affair.
The Lions roll into next week’s Championship game undefeated in conference and GSAC Tournament play. Wisniewski comments on the Pride’s expectations in the coming games this season saying, “We’re good enough to beat any team, and I think we can win a national championship.”
A win against Biola on Friday will earn the Lions an improved seed into the NAIA Tournament in Alabama where they are currently ranked fifth in the nation.
