Dreams, goals, aspirations: we all have them. Dreams seem unattainable at times, however, professional BMX flatland rider Terry Adams asserts that dreams are attainable; you just have to make them a reality.
Adams is an international BMX flatlanding sensation. He has been seen on multiple magazine covers and feature interviews to help give flatland riding a name of its own.
Most recently, he has been seen at Vanguard on Friday, September 21st, in the Business department encouraging students to follow their dreams. He also performed various flatland demonstrations for the group of students, representing his sponsor, Red Bull.
Adams takes every opportunity to promote the sport he is so passionate about. “Flatland is my heart and soul,” he tells a Red Bull rep. “I will do everything I can to help it grow.”
Flatland is a freestyle BMX riding style performed on smooth flat surfaces, not including ramps, jumps, or grind rails. It is often described as a form of artistic cycling with a mix of breakdancing.
In 2005, Adams took home the gold medal at the Asian X Games in Korea, earning a NORA Cup award for Flatland Rider of the Year, and appeared on the cover of RideBMX magazine’s December issue.
In a small town in Louisiana, Adams found a love for the sport when he was just 12 years old. He has been pursuing his BMX dreams ever since. “It is all about following your dreams, making them into a practical reality,” Adams said.
He became an entrepreneur and determined at a young age. Even when he was a child, he called different companies and sent out tapes and resumes. “I did anything I could to get in the industry,” he said.
Asthma and dyslexia forced Adams to be home-schooled as a child. However, these mere obstacles did not keep Adams from achieving his dreams. “If you want something bad enough, you can do whatever you want in this world,” he tells a Red Bull rep. “You just need to believe.”
In 2008, Adams published his first autobiography entitled “Dreams,” which showcases his life and career, focusing on the positive message of working hard to make your dreams a reality. He is excited for people to hear his story in hopes to show viewers anything is possible.
