The tennis program this year looks strong, as the team has added three new members to its roster on both the mens and womens teams. The men started their season on January 28 against Northern Arizona University. The Lions had a dominating win, 6-1, and the light shines bright upon their upcoming season.
The Lions are eager to get past the quarter finals, a mark they have achieved for the past two seasons. The mens team is looking good with addition of three new recruited players, junior Lukas Larsson, and freshmen Roger Muri and Lucas Tandy.
“This season the men’s team is looking stronger than ever. We want to finish top three in GSAC, as well as get past the quarter finals,” junior Yagor Kryvaruchka said.
The womens squad looks promising with the addition of three freshmen players on the team: Gabriele Alford, Nina Pudar, and Petronella Lindahl. Although the Lions only have a total of six players, that will not stop them from being a force in GSAC. The team looks to send a number of players onto Nationals to represent Vanguard. The season began with a match up at the University of Redlands on Feb. 11.
The Lions are looking good, but that is not to say that the competition is not up to the challenge. The team recognizes that it will be facing quality teams such as APU, Westmont, Point Loma, and the top-ranked Fresno Pacific University. The team members believe they will be able to defeat each opponent if they work hard enough.
Nationals will be held in Alabama this year on May 15. Vanguard has a list of scheduled home games throughout the next month, so make sure to come out and support the Lions. The team practices and plays at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, which is on Newport Boulevard.
