In late February, Residence Life announced the 2011-2012 Resident Assistants. RAs are current students who work under the authority of an RD (Resident Director). RDs oversee an entire resident hall, and RAs supervise one floor within the hall.
They serve in many various ways, including: developing floor themes, welcoming students, providing floor events, building friendships, answering questions, and ultimately functioning as helpful and Godly friends and mentors.
The Laguna Hall RAs are as follows: seniors Jenni Hamelink and Kyli Putnam, and juniors Allison Tash, Cassy Gutierrez, Anjolie Phillips and Jordan Baker.
Baker has wanted to be an RA since about her junior year of high school and looks forward to creating a floor environment that raises the girls up.
The Huntington Hall RAs are: juniors Trevor Sikorski and Kyle Labeaune, and sophomores Jordan P. Smith, Denver Miller, Roger Martinez, and Micah Hamilton.
Hamilton’s RA inspired him to become an RA.
“My RA, Edgar, was kind of the father of the floor. I got to go to him when I just wanted to talk or when I wanted someone to hang out with,” Hamilton said. “He was definitely a good role model for me and I foundthat I wanted to be just like him.”
Catalina RAs are: juniors Caley Martin, Heather McGuire, Kim Revie, Jacque Siquina, Courtney Hutton, Lauren Minnick, Karina Desroses, and Rebecca Dattilo.
Dattilo is excited for the potential that the year holds.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know the girls on my floor, to creating a sisterhood, [and to] planning events.”
Her Catalina Hall RA has served as a support, role model, spiritual mentor, and best friend. Dattilo wants to provide other girls the same opportunity.
Seniors Elijah Dove, Kevin Strickland, and Tyler Wayman, and juniors Chris Randolph, Ileigh Williams, Sarah Maresh, Brooke Baldwin, and Kirstie Burke will serve as the Balboa and Newport RAs.
Dove looks forward to meeting new people and fostering relationships. Planning floor events also sparks his interest.
“I think it sounds like fun,” Dove said. “It’s always like, ‘Aw, I wish we could do this for a floor event.’ And now I have the power.”
However, the RAs anticipate challenges. Balancing schoolwork, their own friends and RA responsibilities may be difficult, but the RAs are prepared to meet the demands of their jobs.
