Vanguard University has many cherished traditions for the student population to participate in, but perhaps one of the most popular of these is Mock Rock.
At approximately 8:40 p.m., a line wrapped around Seymour Sanctuary, including current students, alumni, and performers’ parents, waiting to get in and witness the event titled “Road Trippin Across the USA.”
For those who don’t know, Mock Rock is a lip-synch battle between the classes. Each year in March, the Vanguard Office of Student Engagement puts on an event for anyone to participate and get a shot at the year’s Mock Rock Champions title.
Each year there is a unique theme chosen. This Mock Rock was themed “Road Trippin Across the USA.”
Freshmen were given “The South” and gave the audience a storyline to follow, where they ventured across the South to find a golden boot. With the storyline and the dedication to the theme, the freshmen had a great Mock Rock debut.
“The Midwest” was the next stop on the road trip, given to the sophomores. Appearances from Eminem and Michael Jackson had the audience engrossed.
The previous year’s winners, the juniors, put together a performance based on “The West.” It was clear just how much time this team put into their performance with the calculated costume changes and timing of beach ball hand-offs.
And lastly, “The East” was given to the seniors. “Surprised” is an understatement, as Pastor Mike made an appearance among the huge ensemble of students who decided to join in for their last year.
After much deliberation from the judges—and the first-ever joint performance of all the choreographers—the winner was announced. The class of 2024 brought home the Mock Rock crown for the first time since becoming students at Vanguard University.
