As the school year approaches, so do the many events that The PeaceMakers Club put on. The club promotes unity within the community and speaks on rampant social issues.
The PeaceMakers club puts on several events throughout the semester to really provide unity amongst the community.
Sophomore, English major Rebekah Pinedo has been the president this past August of the club. She states, “This semester, I plan on putting on between three to five more events. My team and I have many things planned for the months of October and November. We plan to do many outreaches and community building in order to create a better bond between students and also play our part in improving the community.”
With the events taking much effort and time, Pinedo has cabinet members to help her with all of the work.
“Coming up with events is not always easy. At times I have little ideas with no vision for how I would execute said plans. However, what has truly helped me gain a sense of direction is discussing with my team and cabinet. Discussions have helped me to articulate my intentions for events and how I would deliver my message well,” she stated.
VP Cabinet member Sophomore, History/Poly Sci & Pre-Law Minor Debbie Tran helps with thinking of ideas for events throughout the semester.
Tran states, “I come up with events via what’s going on with the world and how it relates to the club.”
Although Pinedo finds it very overwhelming at times she can’t accomplish all of the desires she has for this club. She still has much help in receiving what she wants to accomplish for the club.
She said, “My ISP team has done nothing but be encouraging and supportive. My cabinet has been an even greater blessing as they take initiative and exceed expectations that I have placed for them. Learning to lean on others as opposed to trying to handle everything on my own has been an ongoing lesson from the beginning of the school year.”
Pinedo believes in creating a safe space within the club and the events they put on to keep an open mind, as well as learning and understanding both sides of a story.
She states, “I believe this club is special largely due to its mission of being a voice for those topics that need publicity so that more people can make a change. Additionally, creating a space where students feel free to discuss heavy topics is absolutely essential for processing heavy subjects.”
Tran makes it her best effort to help make the community better through the club. “I think this club is special because it is a safe space for people to discuss and learn about different social injustices.”
