Class of 2015 Senior, Joi Goynes has attended Vanguard University since her freshman year in 2011. She is a Captain on the Track and Field team. Throughout her childhood, she played basketball and participated in track and field, her first race was in kindergarten. She is currently majoring in Psychology and minoring in Pre-Law and is in the process of applying for law school. She would like to become a criminal defense attorney or help people involving juvenile law.
Goynes’ had a smooth transition coming from Faith Lutheran High School (Las Vegas, Nevada), into Vanguard. Joi has attended Christian schools her entire life so it was not a difficult transition for her when she made the decision to come to Vanguard University.
In high school, she was searching for colleges to go to with the help of her father. While searching Joi and her dad came across Vanguard University. They discovered that her pastor at the time was a Vanguard alumni, who played baseball at the university. Everything worked out that she received a letter of recommendation from her pastor.
Freshman year at Vanguard she sprained her ankle two weeks before nationals.
Goynes’ sophomore year she focused on being healthy and working hard. That year she qualified for the 60 meter dash along with the distance medley relay. She also broke the school record for the 60 and 100 meter dash.
Her junior year was great as well, she was in the school record breaking and national qualifying 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays. Goynes’ described her time at Vanguard, “Looking back over the years I can say my experience has been pretty amazing!”
She believes that this year the the track and field team has amazing talent. Goynes’ stated “I know that we can do nothing but succeed this season, break multiple records, and get personal bests.”
This track season she is looking forward to breaking records, qualifying for nationals, and setting personal goals for herself.
